Nathaniel and Elsie Lawrence of Callaway celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 11, 2010, at I.C. Hall in Mechanicsville with more than 200 family and friends. One of the many gifts received was a cruise to the Caribbean.
The couple met in 1957 and were married in 1960 in Bushwood. They had three children: Cynthia, who died as an infant; Catherine; and Nathaniel "Nate" Jr. They also have two grandchildren, Talif and Shawna.
Both were born and raised in St. Mary's County and lived there until moving to Washington, D.C., in 1960. Nathaniel worked as a laborer and truck driver and retired after 41 years as a warehouse manager. Elsie was a stay-at-home mom until their son started school in 1971. She then worked for the Washington, D.C., government, then the federal government, and she retired after 32 years as a program manager at Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
The family moved back to St. Mary's in 1975.
In 1984, Nathaniel started the Lawrence Locksmith business.
They both enjoy the blessing of retirement and being able to choose what they'd like to do each day. They most enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren.
