A community kick-off meeting to discuss the future of the Lexington Park Development District will be held May 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bay District firehouse in Lexington Park. There will be introduction to the planning process and direction from the community where to concentrate planning efforts. A stroke awareness fair will be held May 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. by St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown in the hospital lobby to educate the community on stroke prevention and management. See www.stmaryshospitalmd.org.
Lexington Park, Great Mills and California combine to make a planning area called the Lexington Park Development District. On May 25 from 6 to 9 p.m., a kick-off meeting will be held at the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall to consider the district's growth and development plan. Anyone who lives, works or plays in the greater Lexington Park area is encouraged to attend. A new student kindergarten roundup will be held by Hollywood Elementary School on May 25 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the school's cafeteria. Parents of incoming kindergarten students and their children will learn about grade-level expectations and will get an inside look at a typical day in kindergarten. Nature Time, Greenwell State Park's outdoor nature program for young children and their families/caregivers, is offered weekly from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $5 per child older than 2. Children under the age of 2 are free. The fee includes admission to the park on the day of participation. Parents and caregivers must supervise their children at all times. The Arc of Southern Maryland's Ninth Annual Pat Collins Golf Classic will be held May 26 at Twin Shields Golf Club in Dunkirk. The Downtown Tunes season begins May 28 in Leonardtown on May 28, opening with a traditional country music program, featuring Country Memories. All concerts are on the fourth Saturdays of the month and all are free. Shows generally begin at 6 p.m. and will run about two hours. All shows are free but concert-goers are invited to bring chairs or blankets to sit on. Rain date is the next day. Downtown Tunes will continue on June 25 with an acoustic music show with The Edds, an acoustic duo of terrific singers and guitarists.
On July 23 Dance Hall Ghost will feature southern rock, country and boogie-woogie tunes, lead by local favorite Gary Rue.
The series winds up on August 27 with rock and roll by Geezer and The 25th Hour Band.
