Students win at SkillsUSA

Students from the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center in Leonardtown recently participated in the SkillsUSA Maryland State Championships held in Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties.
During the award ceremony, 43 Forrest center students were recognized for placing sixth or higher in their respective competition, and 30 students earned medals.
First-place honors went to Cassandra Osvatics and Meghan Tinsley in Audio/Radio Production; Randy Combs, Thomas Mark Julian and Russell Gilbert in Automated Manufacturing Technology; Ashley Rickett, Leland Sadler, Margaret Waldron in Crime Scene Investigation; Matthew Reumont in Criminal Justice; Steven Gray in Aviation Maintenance Technology; and Billy Connelly in Sheet Metal.
Second-place honors went to Douglas Harbold in Aviation Maintenance Technology; Christopher Tayman, Victoria Furlow, Tiffany Ledbetter in Crime Scene Investigation; Robert Jenquin in Internetworking; Sal Trancredi in Technical Drafting; Chris Hall in Sheet Metal; and Matt Hunt and Josh Hudson in Video Product Development.
Third-place awards went to Nicholas Fernauld in Aviation Maintenance Technology; Kenyetta Chase, Emma Williams, James Rhine and Hannah Higgs in Broadcast News Production; Maria Williams in Criminal Justice; Charles Fletcher in Job Interview; Ian Sharkey in Technical Drafting; Jessica Russell in T-shirt Design; and Tom Chewning in Sheet Metal.
Fourth-place awards went to Andrew Sprouse in Cabinetmaking and Lauren Hurst in Dental Assisting.
Fifth-place awards went to Tashianna Hebb, Tyler Payne and Amanda Quade in Crime Scene Investigation; Caitlyn Selph in Dental Assisting; and Shelby Oller in Internetworking.
Sixth-place awards went to Jessica Maida in Dental Assisting; Danie Haynie in Diesel Equipment Technology; Michael DeJesus in Medical Math; and to John Valentine and Robby Saunders in Television (Video) Production.
In addition, Mayokun Ojo, a Forrest center student, was elected president of the Maryland SkillsUSA Chapter for 2011-2012. Forrest center students Charles Fletcher, Sabrina Lemiere and Corrine Williams were selected as national voting delegates.
All first-place winners now qualify to compete at the SkillsUSA National Skills and Leadership Conference held in Kansas City, Mo., during the week of June 20. Fourteen Forrest center students are planning to represent Maryland this year, and fundraising efforts are currently under way.
