Man tries to rob La Plata business

At about 9:18 p.m. Jan. 8, a man entered Simpson's Store at 8350 Oliver Shop Road in La Plata and gave an employee a note demanding money.

The victim initially thought the note was a joke and refused to comply. The man then displayed a handgun, at which point the victim activated an alarm, police reported.

The man was described as between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches. He fled the store without obtaining money.

Man arrested on drug charges

A La Plata man was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana after Maryland State Police pulled over his truck in Mechanicsville on Dec. 30, an MSP release stated.

Trooper first class J.A. Pilkerton was patrolling in the area of All Faith Church Road at 12:56 p.m. when he saw a white Ford speeding, according to the report. Pilkerton stopped the truck near Wanda Lane and smelled marijuana while speaking to the driver, Marcus Demetrius Yates, police reported. Pilkerton discovered Yates had a baggie of marijuana, police said. Yates, 29, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was taken to the St. Mary's County jail and held pending a bond review.

Fire marshals investigate soda bomb explosions

A soda bottle bomb exploded in White Plains on Jan. 6, and a second bomb went off in La Plata the same day, according to the state fire marshal's office.

Sheriff's officers responded at 8:57 p.m. to the reported blast on Tucker Lane in White Plains, and fire marshals collected evidence at the scene. The La Plata soda bottle bomb was detonated at about 10 p.m. Jan. 6, but a resident near the blast didn't report the incident until the following day at 10:51 a.m., according to authorities. The La Plata Police Department and fire marshals went to the scene at Clarks Run Road and collected evidence.

The investigations are continuing.

Masked men rob Waldorf resident

A man was robbed in Waldorf on Jan. 11 while in his driveway.

The victim was unloading his car when two masked men walked up, showed a handgun and demanded money, according to police. The victim complied, and the men fled. Sheriff's officers responded to the 4100 block of Lancaster Circle for a report of the robbery at about 9:32 p.m.

Game systems swiped during burglary

Someone broke into a Waldorf home Jan. 11 and stole game systems.

Officers went to the 4200 block of Drake Court after hearing of the burglary, which happened between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
