Huntingtown woman dies in home fire

A Huntingtown woman died when she was unable to escape her burning home Tuesday afternoon.
According to a Maryland Fire Marshal's Office press release, the fire, which occurred at about 3:21 p.m. took the life of 79-year-old Genevieve Therese Knight, who was home alone and not able to escape the fire at her residence at 300 Sun Park Lane in Huntingtown.
Upon returning home from shopping, Mrs. Knight's husband, Ralph, discovered the house filled with smoke and the smoke alarm sounding. He ran to a neighbor's home and called 911.
Twenty-five firefighters from the Huntingtown, Dunkirk, Prince Frederick and North Beach volunteer fire departments responded to the fire.
The victim was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital and she will be transferred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for examination.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Calvert County Sheriff's Office are investigating the cause of the fire. Damage is estimated at $150,000.
