Tiki Bar co-owner charged with assault in St. Mary’s County

Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008

Terry Anthony Clarke, 44, a co-owner of the Tiki Bar on Solomons Island, has been charged with three counts each of first- and second-degree assault, three counts of reckless endangerment and firearm possession with a felony conviction after allegedly firing an assault rifle at hunters near his California, Md., home.

According to a press release from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, on Dec. 29, Clarke ‘‘began shooting a Bushmaster AR-15 [assault rifle] at three victims who were hunting at a pond located near the suspect’s residence. Suspect Clarke advised the victims’ weapons were making too much noise. ... [F]urther investigation revealed Clarke was in possession of a regulated firearm after being a convicted felon.”

Charging documents indicate Clarke fired about 25 to 30 rounds of ammunition at three men as they waded in the pond searching for water fowl they had shot.

A search of Clarke’s house ‘‘revealed numerous rifles, shotguns, handguns and approximately 3,000 rounds of ammunition,” according to the press release.

Clarke is prohibited from owning most firearms because of a conviction on narcotics distribution and handgun charges filed in 1986, according to court records.

Clarke’s attorney, Leonardtown-based Daniel Slade, declined to comment. A woman who answered the telephone at a listing for a ‘‘T Clarke” in California, Md., said it was not Terry Clarke’s residence. He could not be reached for comment.

Clarke was released on bond, according to sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Steven Hall. There will be a preliminary hearing Jan. 24 in Leonardtown.
