Gov. Martin O'Malley welcomed the 28-member squad to the State House on Monday, reading a proclamation in recognition of the team's achievement and giving them a tour of his office.
"I think it's a big deal to get this sort of recognition," said Ted Hale, a senior team captain. "It's a small sport and we don't get a lot of attention."
The St. Mary's team won the 2009 ICSA/GILL Coed Dinghy National Sailing Championship in San Francisco, regarded as the Super Bowl of intercollegiate sailing, on June 3. It was the school's third coed national championship. Since 1993, the college has reeled in 14 national sailing crowns and produced more than 100 ICSA All-American sailors.
O'Malley (D) greeted the team in the ornate Governor's Reception Room and received a crash course on the sport from Hale and coach Adam Werblow.
Hale presented O'Malley with a tie designed to look like the team burgee, or the small flag displayed on a yacht to distinguish it from other boats.
After posing for pictures, O'Malley read a proclamation that declared Feb. 1, 2010 as a statewide day of celebration in honor of the team. The governor also gave the team a state certificate to add to the team's trophy case.
