Charles schools closed Tuesday, school board reschedules meetings

Charles County public school officials announced Monday that schools will be closed Tuesday and the scheduled Charles County Board of Education meeting will be held Tuesday but it will begin at an earlier time.

Public schools spokeswoman Katie O'Malley-Simpson said snow and ice are still on back roads in the county and predictions for additional bad weather in the afternoon caused the school system to cancel another day of school. This makes for the fourth snow day this calendar year.

O'Malley-Simpson said there are four snow days built into the calendar. Any additional days the school system takes must be made up before the end of the school year.

The board of education meeting was moved two hours earlier, to 11:15 a.m. and the board will be in session until 1 p.m. The two items on the agenda for the shortened meeting are the fiscal 2011 school budget and Race to the Top grant, an initiative of the federal governments Recovery and Reinvestment Act — the stimulus law — program.

The recognition portion of the board meeting originally scheduled for 4:30 p.m. has been canceled and the public forum of the meeting originally scheduled for 6 p.m. has been canceled.

The public hearing for the 2011 budget will be rescheduled for Feb. 18 at Westlake High School beginning at 5:30 p.m. School board members will take action on the budget following the hearing, according to O'Malley-Simpson.
