Despite the wintery blast the county saw last Saturday, law enforcement officers were dressed for tropical weather wearing Hawaiian shirts for the Calvert County Sheriff's Office annual awards banquet.
The program and banquet, which involved much preparation, were all set, so Sheriff Mike Evans said the "Night on the Island" was a go in spite of the snow, and it went well.
Most of the people were able to get there, except a few guests from the state's attorney's office and some county commissioners, Evans said, adding, "Susan Shaw made it."
The Calvert County Fairgrounds building was decked with luau decorations and a whole cooked pig with an apple in its mouth, was laid out as a center piece, Evans said. The pig was cooked by Johnny Gott, Assistant Patrol Commander First Sgt. Todd Ireland's father-in-law, he said.
Ireland's wife Shirley and Jessica Jones, both of the sheriff's office, put the event together.
"It was a big group effort," Evans said of the affair.
After the feast, awards were presented to law enforcement officers and correctional officers as well as some community members.
Deputy Nicholas DeFelice of the Calvert Investigative Team was awarded Detective of the Year.
"I was very shocked" to get the award, DeFelice said, wanting to acknowledge that investigations are more of a team effort.
"We do work on all assignments together," he said, adding, "I appreciate the recognition."
A few officers earned more than one award as individual efforts and team work were recognized by the sheriff.
Five deputies and three detectives first class earned the Outstanding Performance award, which requires at least three out of four of the following criteria: 50 criminal closures, 20 DUI arrests, 10 controlled dangerous substance or drug arrests and 500 traffic stops in 2009. Along with an Outstanding Performance award, Deputy Roscoe Kreps was also awarded Deputy of the Year, Deputy James Norton earned Rookie of the Year and Dfc. Mark Fitzgerald was awarded Top Gun, with Dfc. Thomas Rickard also earning a Sheriff's Excellence award and Deputy Frank Winston earning a Sheriff's letter of recognition.
Commander of the Patrol Division, Lt. Dave McDowell, selected Sgt. Brian Bowen as Patrol Supervisor of the Year after conferring with the sheriff. Many of the top producers were under him in his unit and his success is a measure of their success, McDowell said.
"I just think he was exemplary," he said, adding, "I have the utmost confidence in all the patrol supervisors, they do a fantastic job."
Milton Crump, administrator of the Calvert County Detention Center, also handed awards out to his employees with Sgt. Phil Bradford being named Corrections Supervisor of the Year and John Hotchkiss as Correctional Officer of the Year.
