I am pleased that John Mattingly has announced his candidacy for state's attorney. However, I believe your Feb. 4 article announcing his candidacy fell short of fully informing your readership about Mr. Mattingly's experience and many accomplishments as an attorney.
I think we are lucky to have candidate of his unmatched qualifications in the race.
Mr. Mattingly is not only a "local boy" who has risen to the top of the national legal scene, but a dedicated lawyer who has made a career of sticking up for the average guy against some of the largest and most powerful corporations in America. He has litigated cases all over the country as well as in the U.S. Supreme Court. Besides his jury verdict records, he is also a prominent legal scholar with more reported opinions than any other practicing attorney in Southern Maryland.
I believe your article did not adequately elaborate on his criminal trial experience and the reasons he stopped defending criminals. Because Mr. Mattingly's moral compass guided him toward punishing criminals instead of helping them be freed, he refocused his legal efforts against large corporations that were committing crimes against consumers like you and me. He recovered millions of dollars for the citizens of Maryland from companies such as CellOne, Comcast, DirecTV, Chrysler, RBC, etc. Ahead of his time, he attacked and brought suit against the mortgage, banking and financial institutions' policies that have contributed to the current economic crisis
The legal community has also recognized Mr. Mattingly's abilities as a litigator for the public interest. When the pipeline in Swanson Creek erupted and oil spilled along the Patuxent River; Mr. Mattingly was appointed by a federal judge as one of the attorneys to lead the litigation against the offending corporation. In this case he acted to protect the interests of the citizens of St Mary's County and the environment.
Mr. Mattingly is the right man for State's Attorney. Whether in front of local juries, appellate courts, and even the Supreme Court, his results have been outstanding. This is a man who has gained national notoriety for his considerable legal accomplishments, as opposed to his opponent, who has gained national notoriety for his misdeeds.
Ultimately, the question in my mind is, who you would rather have prosecuting the big case?
I firmly believe John Mattingly is the winning and courageous lawyer we need as state's attorney.
John J. Carey, Leonardtown
