Keep on truckin' ... without your dog

I was absolutely speechless after reading the article, "Bill to restrict dogs from riding in pickup beds defeated in Senate" [Maryland Independent, Feb. 25]. Only for a few seconds, though, as my husband can attest.
As I sit here trying to come up with a logical explanation of why a legislator would value "farm tradition" over the safety and life of his dog (and other dogs throughout the state of Maryland), only one word comes to mind: Ignorance.
So there would be "a lot of unhappy dogs" if they could not ride freely in the backs of pickup trucks on the farm or the back roads? Even if that statement were true, "unhappy dogs" beats dead or injured dogs.
I am sure that in my lifetime I've heard comments more ignorant than what I read in that article, but I honestly cannot remember any.
Another thing I am trying to figure out is why support for this measure seemed to follow party lines, with Democrats in favor and Republicans against. I am a lifelong Republican.
To Sen. Norman Stone Jr. and Del. Kevin Kelly and all others who supported this bill, my hat is off to you and I hope this is not the last we've seen of it.
