Spring sports tryouts and practices were set to begin for the St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks in late February. But there was one slight problem, there were no fields.

As snow storm after snow storm blew through Southern Maryland, white snow, rather than green grass, covered much of the training grounds for the spring sports.

Coaches and players alike were stuck with training inside, rather than out. Now, however, the weather has cleared, the grass has reappeared and athletes are on the fields.

"We had about a month or so indoors," St. Mary's lacrosse senior Kelsey Branch said. "We did not have any practices outside and only had maybe two practices outside before our first game. So, we were really excited to get out there when we could. … It felt great."

Although the Seahawks have kicked off the season at 0-4, Branch, named to last season's all-Capital Athletic Conference second team, currently leads the team in assists with seven on the year also adding one goal scored, thus far.

"I have been trying to get myself pumped up for this season going in," Branch said. "I want to be a little more of a threat to goal, but I think that making your teammates look good and being a team player is the prime focus. Getting the ball to someone who is more likely to score a goal is what I am focused on."

Teammate Nora Fallon-Oben currently leads the team with nine goals, respectively, in addition to eight goals from Lauriann Parker.

"Our biggest goal this year is to beat Salisbury, because they have been our biggest rival, forever it seems," Branch said. "…We want to get to the CAC finals, and win, so we can get to NCAAs and perform well there."

Branch's male counterparts, the Seahawks men's lacrosse program, have picked up one win thus far with a 9-6 victory over Franklin & Marshall on March 6. Junior attack Dennis Rosson scored two goals in that contest and currently leads the team with five goals on the year.

On the diamond, the Seahawks baseball team has picked up two wins so far this season, and although the weather is opening up in Southern Maryland, the Seahawks will be in much a much better weather area for a three-game tournament.

Junior right fielder Bobby Corton currently leads the Seahawks in batting average, hitting at a .300 clip with two RBIs in 20 at-bats this year.

The men's tennis team has seen the most team success this year, as far as wins, earning six wins with three losses through the early season.

Overall, four Seahawks men have won five matches in singles play, those being Kenny Nugent, Arvin Wong and Sam Barton with five wins and one loss each, and Drew Barnes at five wins and two losses. In doubles play, Barnes with teammate Joshua Olexa are 3-0 thus far.

The women's tennis squad has won four matches this year to two losses and is led in wins at seven with Chelsea Bradcovich in singles play. In women's doubles the combination of Beth Handy and Katie Lackler are currently 4-0.
