Marie Kurtz, chief of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, is congratulated Wednesday by friend Jessica Vallandingham after being recognized Wednesday for outstanding community service by the St. Mary's County Commission for Women during its annual banquet at the James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center in Leonardtown. Vallandingham nominated Kurtz for the award as other nominees included Catherine Clay, co-founder of St. Matthew's Free Gospel Church and Amy C. Smith, captain of the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad. Kimberly Howe, capital planning supervisor for county public schools, won the award for outstanding environmental services as she was nominated alongside community environmental activist Linda Vallandingham.
