When people and organizations cooperate to serve our community, the effort needs to be recognized and celebrated. ‘‘Safe Nights” was a step of faith on the part of LifeStyles Inc. of La Plata and the churches of Charles County.
The program developed out of concern for the homeless population in our community and the need for shelter during the colder months. LifeStyles provided the vision and supervision for the program and the transportation for the clients. The churches provided their facilities, two meals a day and volunteers to supplement the LifeStyles staff each night.
The result has been an unusually cost-effective program that has provided shelter for scores of individuals this winter. LifeStyles is to be commended for seeing the need and for bringing churches together to accomplish what none of us could have done by ourselves.
The program is scheduled to close for this year on March 31. Of course, the needs of the homeless will continue. My hope is that we will continue to pursue creative ways to work together to meet those needs.
