Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Md.,5th), Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Calvert, Prince George's) and Del. Sue Kullen (D-Calvert), please do what is right for Calvert County. After all, we elected you as our voice. With this mandate comes the huge responsibility to represent our views. Calvert County is unique, as our views in many instances do not reflect the policies of the state or federal government. In prior elections, your popularity did not help the governor or president win Calvert County. The truth is, if our state and country had voted like many of us, Bob Ehrlich and John McCain would be in office.
Currently, our country, state and local jurisdictions have huge financial problems. It is going to take many great sacrifices to overcome these obstacles. Our children will have to overcome all of these problems. This was not their fault, however, unfortunately this is what they will inherit from us.
On the front page of The Calvert Recorder on March 11 was a story about the possible school teacher layoffs in Calvert County. Give the children a break. As our elected officials, you should make sure that adequate funding is available so that there will not be reductions to the education workforce. On March 7, the College of Southern Maryland hosted the Robotics Challenge. Elementary and middle schools throughout Southern Maryland participated. Calvert County school teams received eight of the awards. This is a testament to the children who are willing to learn and the educators and volunteers who are willing to teach. In short, America's future will be in our children's hands. Their future will have many obstacles and a watered down education will only make it more difficult.
Many of us moved to Calvert County from other jurisdictions in the Washington/Baltimore area. We saw Calvert as the right place to live and nurture our children. This has proven to be the right choice. I see my children and grandchildren as bright, shining examples of what a good education can do. I am sure that many others feel the same way. In the future, we will be asking them to withstand huge financial deficits. If they are to succeed, they will need the best and the brightest to teach them. My wish is that you as elected officials assist the Calvert County school system in avoiding reductions.
