St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown is a full-service facility, delivering state-of-the-art emergency, acute inpatient and outpatient care.
To meet the growing demand for more sophisticated health care, the hospital has integrated new techniques, purchased advanced medical equipment and set its sights on achieving excellent patient satisfaction ratings. Most recently, it has installed digital mammography to provide early detection of breast cancer and purchased a state-of-the art MRI and CT scanner. The hospital also went live with its new electronic medical records system in July 2008 and has implemented CareMobile, a handheld scanning device designed to prevent medication errors. In recent years, it has added the most technologically advanced 4-D ultrasound equipment and mobile PET/CT scan services.
A range of cancer treatment is available, including patient services and access to research and national clinical trials. The hospital's Cancer Care and Infusion Services is an ambulatory clinic providing biotherapy and chemotherapy administration, transfusions, venous access device management and intravenous hydration and antibiotics. The hospital employs a tumor registrar whose role is to identify, register and maintain records for county cancer patients, as well as a patient navigator to guide patients through cancer care
As one of three members of the Chesapeake Potomac Healthcare Alliance, St. Mary's Hospital joined Maryland Regional Cancer Care in the formation of the Chesapeake Potomac Regional Cancer Center. Opened in the spring of 2006, this center is located adjacent to the St. Mary's Medical Center at Charlotte Hall and also in Waldorf. Therapies offered include external beam radiation, advanced CT simulation, 3-D treatment planning, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and image guided radiation therapy.
In January 2005, the hospital's Emergency Department teamed with MEP — a physician-owned and managed practice serving the Maryland and Metro D.C. area.
St. Mary's Hospital Women's Health and Family Birthing Center features five birthing rooms, along with a Jacuzzi room and 12 private, single-patient postpartum suites. The facility offers skilled, high-risk prenatal care with a direct telemedicine link to specialists at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Also, newborns requiring a neonatal consultation can receive an immediate diagnosis via a second link to Children's National Medical Center.
From health fairs and fitness classes to support groups and community involvement, the hospital's Health Connections program offers an array of programs. Free and low-cost services are provided at the center as well as satellite offices and other locations throughout the county. Get Connected to Health, a new, low-cost primary care service for uninsured residents of St. Mary's County, is offered every Monday at the Lexington Park library.
