Lions win third straight

Semi-pro football team takes down Prince George's

Friday, April 3, 2009

The Charles County Lions semi-pro football team hosted the Prince George's Knights on March 28 and came away with a 33-6 victory.

The Knights came into the game with a 1-1 record, having scored 24 points in two games while only allowing 7. The Lions won their first two games and their defense had not allowed any points to be scored against them.

The game started in a big way with a 40-yard pass by Lions quarterback Tyler McConnell to wide receiver Greg Bowman, putting the Lions offense at the 11-yard line. The Knights, however, wouldn't let the Lions into the end zone, so the Lions settled for a field goal. Lions kicker, Travis Savoy, had been struggling in the last two games but was back to a sure thing for the game, making all four extra points.

The Lions first touchdown of the game came after a bad punt from the Knights that gave the Lions only 20 yards to go for the touchdown. They capitalized on the great field position with a two-yard run by fullback Mike Morris, a 16-yard pass from McConnell to Bowman and another run by Morris put the Lions in the end zone.

The Lions defense stopped the Knights from answering, leaving the score at the half 10-0 for the Lions.

The Knights had deferred to the second half at the opening coin toss, so they received the ball to start the second half.

The Knights had a decent drive going, but two penalties had them backed up to their own end zone when defensive end Cedric Thomas sacked the quarterback in the end zone and chalked up a safety for the Lions.

The Knights kicked to the Lions and running back Dwight Savoy ran the ball back 25 yards to the 20-yard line. The Lions drove the ball to the 1, but couldn't get it in, so the Knights took over on downs.

It was first down and 10 on the 1 when the Knights quarterback fumbled the ball, which was recovered by the Lions' Rashad Yarborough. Two plays later, Tyler McConnell ran four yards for the touchdown to put the Lions up 19-0.

The Knights received the ball, threw one incomplete pass and then a 40-yard pass yielded their first and only score of the day. They went for the two-point conversion, but the Lions denied them. This was the first score on the Lions this season.

The Lions got the ball back and, on second down, Tyler McConnell threw a 55-yard pass to Travis Savoy for the Lions' third touchdown of the day.

They scored again late in the fourth quarter when running back Dwight Savoy broke through the Knights and ran the ball 38 yards to the end zone.

The Lions had 148 passing yards and 58 rushing yards on offense. Their defense played exceptionally well, too

Donald Knight had eight tackles, two for losses, while Averill Butler and Clyde Jones each had six and Terry Barnes had five.

Yarborough sacked the quarterback and recovered a fumble and Cameron Fuller also recovered a fumble after it was forced by Jones.

This Saturday, the Lions will travel to Baltimore to play the Baltimore Hurricanes, who are also 3-0. The Hurricanes have scored 69 points and have allowed 29 points against them.

This will be the game of the week with the winner claiming first place for now in the NFC Central Division of the East Coast Football Association. The Lions next home game will April 18 against the Waynesboro Tigers.
