Lindsay Tempinson, right, program director for the St. Mary's River Watershed Association, helps volunteers Mike Vargesko and Elaine Stonebreaker haul out some of the trash collected Saturday morning during the annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. Using canoes and kayaks, volunteers pulled from the St. Mary's River half a ton of trash, including six tires, two chairs, a 110-pound 1970s-vintage printer and a copper hubcap. Thousands of volunteers cleaned up hundreds of sites along the Potomac River and its tributaries Saturday during the annual event and picked up more than 86 tons of trash, including more than 600 tires, 95,200 recyclable beverage containers and 15,000 cigarette butts.
