Baseball

Calvert 10, Chopticon 7

Calvert collected 14 hits and scored in five of six innings to defeat visiting Chopticon, 10-7, Friday afternoon.

Chris Custer led Calvert’s hit parade with three while Derek Richards, Khaatim Butler and Doug Kletter each had two. Nick Bowles had three RBIs.

The Braves opened the scoring with a run in the first but Calvert (3-4-1, 3-3-1 SMAC) answered with a four-run second inning on three hits, two walks, two Chopticon errors and two wild pitches. The Cavaliers added two runs in each of the third and fourth innings and pushed across runs in the fifth and sixth.

Aaron Cook struck out two batters and picked up the win while Kletter recorded the save. The two teams combined to commit 10 errors, six by Calvert.

Boys lacrosse

Northern, Huntingtown win but Casalino Cup postponed

Heavy rains forced the postponement of the Casalino Cup Tournament held Saturday at Huntingtown High. Both Northern and Huntingtown reached the final and Hurricanes coach Vic Goeller is hoping to reschedule the semifinals and championship games.

In the first consolation game, Ben Thompson scored a team-high three goals to power Northern past James Madison. Peter Athens scored two goals and Adam Chase, Jesse Jones and David Taylor each scored one. Athens and Matt Lloyd each added assists while Pat McMeins had a team-high five loose balls. Taylor also won 4 of 5 faceoffs.

The Patriots (6-1, 5-0) outscored the Warhawks, 5-4, in the third period and scored the only two goals of the fourth period to seal the win.

Huntingtown (4-2, 3-1) secured its berth in the championship game with a 12-3 thrashing over Springbrook.

Curtis Wright scored a game-high six goals and Kelsey Baier-Anderson, Nick Skalamera, Trey Bradbury, Culver Bradbury, Joshua Buckler and David Wiese each scored once. Baier-Anderson also chipped in four assists. Jason Marks had a team-high eight loose balls and David Rice won 10 of 18 faceoffs. Goalie Matt Deacon turned aside 22 shots.

Northern 14, Patuxent 6

The Hayden brothers, Sean and Thomas, each scored two goals but visiting Patuxent dropped a 14-6 decision to Northern on Friday night.

Will Ragan and Steve Soucoup each scored one goal for the Panthers and Soucoup collected six loose balls. Goalie Tony Roulhac stopped 11 shots.

The loss was the second straight for Patuxent (3-3, 3-2) after a three-game winning streak.

Softball

Northern 5, McDonough 2

Becca Sanders tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lift host Northern to a 5-2 win over McDonough last Wednesday.

Sanders struck out seven and walked two.

Offensively, Northern had five hits, one each by Sanders, Cammie Orlandi, Kristen Schalk, Julie Orlandi and Tiffany Sanders.

Northern (4-3, 4-3) has won its last three games by a 19-2 margin after starting the season 1-3.

Tennis

Great Mills 7, Patuxent 2

The visiting Panthers dropped all four singles matches and went on to lose 7-2 to host Great Mills on Friday afternoon.

Patuxent (3-4, 3-4) picked up its two wins courtesy of its No. 1 boys doubles team of John Ly and Arthur Simpson, 6-2, 6-3, and its mixed doubles tandem of Sean Benedik and Maggie DeLorme, 6-0, 6-1.

The win over Patuxent was the first for Great Mills coach Derek Sabedra in five years of coaching. The Panthers have lost their last two matches by a 14-4 combined score.

Key School 5, Calverton 0

Calverton 4, Takoma Academy 1

Calverton rebounded from its first defeat in more than a year to defeat host Takoma, 4-1, April 4 at the Wheaton Regional Park tennis bubble.

The Cougars (1-1, 1-0 MISAL) dropped a 5-0 decision to the Obezags on March 23 but bounced back to defeat Takoma Academy.

In singles play, Alan Chaney (No. 1) pounded Donell Ray, 10-3, Eric Hubble (No. 2) was a 10-1 winner over Collier Bowe and Philip Bunn (No. 3) doubled Mallory Pollard, 10-5.

In doubles action, Megan Langdon and Ian Hubbard claimed a 10-0 walkover win at No. 1. The Cougars’ only loss was at No. 2 doubles where Jocelyn Richard and Robin Turner came up on the short end of an 11-9 score.

Track and field

Huntingtown, Patuxent fare well at Seahawk Invite

Huntingtown and Patuxent enjoyed success at the Fourth Annual Seahawk Invitational on Saturday at South River High.

In the boys meet, Patuxent’s Robert McClain won the 100, 200 and long jump while teammates Russell Morin (1,600) and Brent Lankford (shot put) each won one. Lankford was also the runner-up in the discus. Eric Farmer placed third in the 300, James Lloyd was third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600 and Justin Ford captured fifth place in the 200.

Zachary Ray led the way for Huntingtown with wins in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and a third-place finish in the long jump. Sean Brooks took the 400 and Matt Cirillo won the discus. Matt Vermillion placed in the top five in three events.

On the girls’ side, Alison Parris of Patuxent ran to victories in the 800 and 1,600 meters while Chrissy Robinson placed first and second in the discus and shot put, respectively. Justine Hoerning finished in third place in the 200 while DeLorme placed fourth in the 800 run.

Jessica Stanley was Huntingtown’s only champion when she emerged victorious in the 400 meters. Christina Barton was runner-up in two events (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) while Sarah Dawes was second in the 1,600. Jessica Leedy was third in the shot put and fourth in the discus while Christina Aumond (1,600) and Gina Luppino (300 hurdles) took fourth.
