Chesapeake Community Choir to present ‘A Gospel Celebration’

Friday, May 2, 2008

The Chesapeake Community Chorus, consisting of singers from many Calvert County churches along with singing friends from the community, is planning a series of concerts of sacred music to benefit the Burnett-Calvert Hospice House.

The performances will be: Sunday, May 4, at 5 p.m. at North Beach Union Church in North Beach; Sunday, May 18, at 5 p.m. at Mt. Harmony United Methodist Church in Owings; and Sunday, June 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Harmony United Methodist Church in Owings.

The theme of the concert, ‘‘A Gospel Celebration,” speaks to the meaning of the songs and joy of Christian living, and the sense of excitement that exists within the message of these Christian songs.

There will be a free-will offering at each concert. The offering in its entirety will be donated to Calvert Hospice, to support the Burnett-Calvert Hospice House, according to a press release.

Calvert Hospice is a nonprofit agency devoted to the care and support of terminally ill patients and their families and those grieving the loss of a loved one. The Hospice House will be available to anyone in Calvert County living their final days with a terminal illness for whom care at home is not an option. Access to Hospice House will be available on a first-come, first-served basis regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.

Garrett MusicAcademy, All Saints Church host fundraiser

On Friday, April 25, the all- too-familiar sound of a rock concert permeated the grounds of the historic All Saints Church in Sunderland. Again, the church grounds became the ‘‘place to be” for teens in Calvert County as the Garrett Music Academy hosted the event to raise money for the People to People Student Ambassador Program, according to a press release.

‘‘We have a lot of students from the academy doing this program this year. It is quite expensive, though, and we wanted to do what we could to help them,” Nick Garrett, owner of the Garrett Music Academy, said in the release.

The program is designed to give students international experience by going to foreign countries for cultural exchange.

‘‘We ended up raising about $450,” said Ken Phelps, the pastor at All Saints. ‘‘And these community events are the types of things that Nick and I are focusing more and more attention on as we look to the coffee house we just opened in Owings.”

Turnabout replaces the Sunflower Cafe as the community’s coffee house.

All Saints Church, The Garrett Music Academy and other community partners have developed the facility to continue community work that All Saints and Garrett have been doing together since 2005.

Turnabout is a place for teens and adults alike to come buy coffee and snacks from the onsite bakery, hang out, study, and play music during open mic nights on the weekends.
