Be healthy? Yes you may. Be physically fit? Yes you may. Decrease your risk for diseases? Yes you may. Celebrate the month of May being National Physical Fitness and Sports Month with Tau Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity? Yes you may.
TLL Chapter is serious about the health of its members and the citizens of Southern Maryland. Because of this, the chapter has created a health initiatives committee with the responsibility of educating the community with various ways of becoming and staying healthy.
The committee recently shared some startling facts from www.fitness.gov: Type 2 diabetes (once called "adult onset" diabetes and associated with high blood pressure and high cholesterol) is now being diagnosed in children and teens; 37 percent of adults report they are not physically active and only 3 in 10 adults get the recommended amount of physical activity; and one-quarter of U.S. children spend four hours or more watching television daily.
The bad news is that these facts mean our community has a way to go concerning maintaining proper health. The good news is that it doesn't have to be your reality; good health can start today. TLL is committed to its members being in good health and we are hoping that the tri-county area extends that commitment to their own lives.
On May 1, the Southern Maryland National Pan-Hellenic Council, which TLL Chapter is a member of, and several other organizations participated in the March of Dimes charity walk in La Plata. This event was a great way to support the health of babies while being active with friends.
On May 13, TLL Chapter, in partnership with the John Lancaster & W. Cecil Short Charity Foundation will host the second Southern Maryland Quest Golf Classic. The golf classic, held at the Swan Point Golf Course, supports TLL's annual high school scholarship awards. We invite the community to support scholarships to high school students in their own areas and come out and be active during the golf classic.
In addition, TLL Chapter is one of the official sponsors of the 16th Annual Civista 5K Run/Walk for Wellness, to be held on May 15 in La Plata. Our members will be participating and also assisting with the event's logistics. We'd love to see everyone in the community come to support the Civista Health Foundation in its mission to provide the community with a full range of health care services.
Need more ideas for being active? TLL suggests starting your own fun run or walk event, a company fitness challenge with your coworkers or doing simple things like playing a game of sports with friends and family or turning the TV off for a week. These are a few small activities that will lead to huge health benefits. Whether you're playing sports or going for a walk, TLL Chapter will meet you on the road to health.
