Money to develop and improve three open space projects in Charles County is up for consideration at today's Board of Public Works meeting.
State officials will ask the three-member panel to approve $1.9 million to construct a regional park in Waldorf, enhance a recreational facility in Nanjemoy and develop an unused rail trail that links Indian Head to White Plains.
The $860,000 request to design and construct a regional park off Poplar Hill Road in Waldorf aims to address the shortage of sports fields in the county. The park will include up to 10 athletic fields, hiking trails, a dog park, playgrounds, picnic areas and a rest room and concession building.
Friendship Farm Park in Nanjemoy is seeking approval for $750,000 to design and construct a combination nature center and interpretive farm facility, which will include a visitors center, trails, amphitheater, wildflower meadows and barns for educational programming. It will be county's first nature-oriented recreational facility.
Officials are also asking the board to approve slightly more than $250,000 to develop the 13-mile, multipurpose recreational trail on a railroad bed once used by the U.S. Navy.
The trail will provide outdoor recreation opportunities, conserve valuable open space and provide an important tourism venue for Charles County, according to a description of the project.
Work is already completed in one phase.
