Thanks for making Miles run successful

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Please allow me this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the eighth annual Robbie Miles Memorial 5K Family Run and Walk a huge success.

The event, which took place Saturday, May 3, benefits the Burnett-Calvert Hospice House, a home-away-from-home for those living their last days with a terminal illness.

I want to personally thank the nearly two-hundred 5K registrants and all who came out to enjoy the day’s activities, which included music, games, face painting and fire truck and ambulance exploration. It was a pleasure to have the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad on-site.

‘‘Thanks” to Vic Papagno and the Chesapeake Bay Running Club for setting up the race course, monitoring the start and finish, tracking time and producing the race results, available on the Calvert Hospice Web site at www.calverthospice.org.

I would like to recognize the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office for its help securing and marshaling the race course.

We are thankful for the support we receive from the running club and police year after year.Ê

Special ‘‘thanks” to our dedicated volunteers who helped make this event possible.

We are grateful for the time, energy and level of enthusiasm they continually dedicate to Hospice activities.

‘‘Thanks” to our special guests, which included former Sen. Bernie Fowler, who introduced the event with praise for Calvert Hospice, Hospice Chaplain Willie Davis who delivered the invocation and Gloria Burley who led the crowd in the National Anthem.

The following organizations have earned our gratitude and respect for their willingness to step forward in support of the race, and of the Burnett-Calvert Hospice House; FaStop Food Stores; SMECO; Bayside Toyota;Dominos; Help Association Inc.; Maryland Bank & Trust Company; Mullen, Sondberg, Wimbish & Stone, P.A.; Calvert Controls Inc.; Calvert Internal Medicine, Carrie Polk Insurance Inc.; Chesapeake Highlands Memorial Gardens; Chesapeake Market Place Inc.; Farm Valley Nursery & Landscaping; Garner & Duff Flower Shop; JBM Sign Shop; Rymer & Associates P.A.; Sneade’s Ace Home Center; Solomons Inn; Joint Venture; Thomas L. In closing, I would like to thank the Friends of Calvert Hospice who hold the 5K each year in memory of Robbie Miles, a young man who has inspired us to enjoy life despite the adversities we may be facing because, after all, it’s about how you live.
