The Charles County Department of Health has issued a water advisory that warns people to avoid contact with the Wicomico River in the River Road area in Newburg.
Stream samples taken May 19 tested positive for bacteria that exceeded the maximum contaminant level for recreational use, said Jason Lang, county spokesman, in a press release.
Lang said additional sampling will be conducted to test the quality of the water.
For information, call the health department's environmental health services division at 301-609-6751 or go to the department's alert page at www.charlescountyhealth.org/alerts/alerts.htm.
