Two Patuxent High School students are recovering from the swine flu, according to a letter sent to parents and others by Calvert County's school superintendent.
Calvert public school officials received notification on Thursday from the Calvert County Health Department of two confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza involving students from Patuxent High School in Lusby.
"While both students have recovered, they will not be in attendance at school for the remainder of this year," Superintendent Jack Smith said in the letter.
The school system will continue to follow the recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Calvert health department, he said.
The agencies have recommended that it is no longer necessary to close schools because of H1N1 influenza.
No cases of the H1N1 flu have been reported in St. Mary's public schools, or confirmed elsewhere in the county.
Parents are asked to contact their child's doctor and school if a child shows signs of the flu, which include a fever with a temperature more than 100 degrees and cough, sore throat, runny nose or nasal stuffiness. Other symptoms can include body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, or, occasionally, vomiting and diarrhea.
Health authorities ask students not to send your child to school or day care.
Children who may have the flu should be kept home for seven days, even if they are feeling better. If they are not better by Day 7, they should be kept home until they have been well and fever-free for at least 24 hours.
