On April 15, the Aqua Squares Dance Club welcomed its 2011 graduating class of 12 new dancers. Dancers ranged in age from 7 to 75. Everyone showed up in the club colors of purple, black and white, and danced four squares all evening. After the first warm up tip, class members were given a spoon and a plastic egg. Their challenge was to dance a tip carrying the egg on the spoon. Four members succeeded in finishing the tip, egg in hand. The second challenge was to dance with one foot in a paper bag. Swish, swish, swish, they circled to the left and circled to the right, no matter how handicapped.
During the break between the tips, the class wearing their graduation caps was challenged with a set of questions. Upon their successful completion of the challenge and reciting the Square Dancer's Pledge, Virgil Forbes, the club's caller, played a fanfare and announced that the students were now official Aqua Square members with their diploma of bachelor of square dancing. Each graduate was given a club badge with dangles attached that included a lighthouse, the club's logo and a caller dangle with the picture of Virgil. The new graduates presented Virgil with a purple shirt. In addition, four of the youngest new graduates shared original poems about their square dance experiences.
The co-presidents thanked the club for recruiting new members and being such fantastic angels and supporting this year's class.
The first week of June begins the club's summer schedule: Dancing With Plus Workshops.
The club will be dancing on Tuesdays in June, July and August from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The club is open to anyone and meets at the Southern Community Center in Lusby.
