A 26-year-old man and his 1-year-old son were struck by an sport utility vehicle Wednesday afternoon, causing the child to be flown to Children's National Medical Center with a serious head injury.

According to a press release from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, Sabrina Marie Hesse, 29, of Lusby was driving the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer on San Mateo Trail near El Segunda Lane. The child reportedly ran out into the street and his father, 26-year-old William Edward Jones III, ran out and grabbed him when both were sideswiped by the SUV. Jones and the baby fell to the ground, causing the injury to the child's head, police said. Jones refused treatment by EMS personnel who responded to the accident. The child was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 7 to the Washington, D.C., hospital. The status of his injuries were not known at press time.

While investigating the accident, police determined the driver, Hesse, was driving the vehicle and had a suspended license, the press release said. Hesse was arrested and charged with driving on a suspended license. Dfc. Harms is continuing the investigation. The release said that the preliminary investigation has determined that no charges in reference to negligent driving will be issued at this time.
