Cobb Island Day celebrated Saturday
Cobb Island Day Festival will be Saturday at Old Fishermen's Field in the center of Cobb Island.
Festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
At 10 a.m. there will be a community parade featuring local groups, fire and police vehicles, and classic cars and motorcycles.
Opening ceremonies begin at 11:10 a.m. with a flag-raising event, followed by the rededication of the Memorial Brick Walkway. Games, contests, entertainment, vendor booths, craft sales, bake sale, food vendors and other events will be held continuously throughout the day.
Family games include a pie-eating contest, sack race, crab races, water balloon toss. They are free and open to all. Additional children's games will be available for a small fee. Go to http://home.comcast.net/~cica/ci-days.html.
Feed the soul
Isaiah D. Thomas and the Elements of Praise, along with Maurette Brown-Clark and her daughter, Jada, will take the stage following performances by local groups.
A donation of $25 per adult is requested, while children will be admitted by bringing nonperishable food items.
Samantha Walker, president of Reaching Out Now, was prompted to put together the event after learning a number of children will go hungry over summer while school is out.
Citing the Maryland Department of Education's October 2008 report, Walker said 25 percent of Charles County students receive free or reduced price lunch.
"It will take the community to pull together and provide nourishing meals for these families and it can be done," said Walker in a press release.
Gates open at noon with the entertainment slated to start at 1 p.m.
