Laraine Glidden, center front, presents a $7,676 check to St. Mary's County Library for the Lindsey Paul Rudolph Fund, matching the total amount of funds donated to the fund. This fund was established by Laraine and William Glidden in memory of Rudolph, who was killed in an auto accident on her way to work at Charlotte Hall library in 2009. The funds are being used to hire a summer children's room assistant starting this summer. Also with Glidden are Friends of the Library President Annette Madel, right, and Board of Library Trustees President Alan Dillingham, left, and, standing in back from left, are Rudolph's husband, Todd Rudolph, and her parents, Susan and Bob Paul.

Summer Reading Programs have begun

Babies through teens can sign up and participate in one of the three summer reading programs from now through Aug. 14.

Those participating receive prizes by reading and a book by completing their reading logs. Each child participating receives a lawn ticket to the July 30 Blue Crabs game and 120 children will receive Baltimore Orioles tickets. One participant will win a year's family membership to the National Aquarium. These programs are free and a great way to help children and teens maintain their reading skills during the summer.

In addition, Uncle Pete will kick off this year's Professional Performance Series on June 28.

Fans can celebrate release of ‘Eclipse'

Twilight fans can celebrate the release of the next movie in The Twilight Saga, "Eclipse," at the Eclipse Jeopardy Extravaganza on June 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Charlotte Hall branch.

In addition to a discussion of Twilight, fans will enjoy a trivia competition and themed snacks. Registration is required for this free program.

Computer fun planned at libraries

Children ages 5 to 8 can explore TumbleBooks, an online collection of animated, talking picture books offered by the library. The classes will be held at the Charlotte Hall branch on June 28 at 1 p.m. or the Lexington Park branch on July 1 at 10:30 a.m. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend. Registration is required.

Teens can challenge their friends in a Battleship tournament online at the Charlotte Hall branch on June 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. Teens ages 12 and older can register for this free activity.

Movies to be shown

The Leonardtown branch will show a G-rated movie on June 23 at 2 p.m. about a clownfish who embarks on a journey to find his son, Nemo, who was captured and stuck in a dentist's fish tank. Also on June 23 at 2 p.m., the Charlotte Hall branch will show the PG-rated movie featuring Robin Williams as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl.

On June 24 at 2 p.m., the PG-rated movie about the son of a gangster shark boss who was accidently killed while on the hunt will be shown at the Lexington Park branch. Snacks are provided at each of the free showings.

Summer Treasure Hunt under way

Hilltop Graphics and Gifts and the library are hosting a Summer Fun Treasure Hunt via Facebook. Six small treasure chests are hidden around the county. Details and clues are posted on the library's Facebook page and website. Anyone can participate. A large treasure chest filled with prizes will be raffled off at the end of the hunt. Entry forms for this raffle are available at each library and at Hilltop Graphics. Finders of the small chests will receive five additional entries in this raffle plus the treasure chest prizes.
