Enjoy World Cup, avoid lengthy flight

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will host a 2010 World Cup Soccer Fan Fest on Saturday at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The event will include the live television broadcast of the United States vs. England World Cup match beginning at 2:30 p.m., special guest appearances by current and former pro soccer players and a specialty soccer memorabilia raffle. There also will be mini-clinics and skill challenges for younger players on the field and face painting, among many activities.

Soccer fans are encouraged to buy their tickets ahead of time by visiting Crown Trophy at 2260 Crain Highway in Waldorf or by calling Civista Health Foundation at 301-609-4132.

According to a Blue Crabs press release, the headline guest at the event will be A.J. DeLaGarza, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS. DeLaGarza, a Bryans Road native, played his college soccer at the University of Maryland from 2005 to 2008. DeLaGarza will be available to sign autographs for fans during the event. Sponsor PNC Bank also will distribute a free giveaway to the first 500 fans in attendance.

The gates will open for the event at noon, and admission is a $5 donation to Civista per guest. Children younger than 5 will be admitted free. All fans are encouraged to show their team spirit by wearing their favorite soccer jersey.

Canoe trip offers environmental lessons

The Patuxent River Sojourn is a five-day canoeing and kayaking expedition that features educational programming, riverside camping, festive meals and live music, among other activities. Novice and experienced paddlers can enjoy a unique on-the-water experience that builds a strong environmental ethic, according to a press release from the Patuxent Riverkeeper organization. Participants may sign up for as many days as they want to paddle, from one day to the full trip.

The schedule is, June 24, kickoff at Greenwell State Park; June 25, restoration activities and creek paddles around Greenwell; June 26, paddle to Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum; June 27, restoration activities and creek paddles around JPPM; June 28, creek paddles around JPPM.

Bingo event to benefit county seniors

Senior Services of Charles County will host a fun afternoon of bingo with cash prizes. The event will feature $50 and $25 prizes and a grand prize $500 game, baked goods, food for sale, a 50-50 raffle, special games and door prizes. Doors will open at 1 p.m. June 13 at the American Legion in La Plata at 6630 Crain Highway, and games will begin at 2 p.m. The cost is $20 at the door for 20 games.
