Calvert Memorial Hospital will host its monthly Lunch & Learn at noon Friday, June 11, in Classroom 1. Dr. Nancy Clark will discuss "Vascular Disease 101." Vascular disease can affect people in many ways — blockages of the coronary arteries can cause a heart attack, blockages in the carotid artery can cause a stroke and blockages in legs can lead to painful walking and more serious complications. The Calvert County Chamber of Commerce will present Legal Lunches, sponsored and hosted by Davis, Upton, Palumbo and Keffler, LLC, 132 Main Street in Prince Frederick, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 15. This is a free forum for the presentation and discussion of legal issues. Topic for this event is the nuts and bolts of commercial real estate and includes typical commercial lease terms, rights and remedies upon default and practical considerations. The Calvert County Sheriff's Office will be hosting its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12. Plan to come and share in the family fun with a bicycle rodeo, K-9 demonstrations, a police moon bounce, train rides and a fast pitch. There will also be a Gatorade Alcohol Awareness program, fire training smoke house, hearing and eye tests, child ID kits and more. Participants in the event include the sheriff's office K-9 unit, the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, D.A.R.E., Maryland Search and Rescue Dogs, the Lions Club, the Masons, Calvert County Government offices, fire and rescue units and many more. Come to Summerseat Farm for Wine in the Gardens, a leisurely afternoon of fine wine, food and music in the gardens of this historic property from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 12. The $20 per person price includes a crystal Summerseat wine glass, the wine tasting, appetizers from Cafe des Artistes in Leonardtown and music by the Folk Salad Trio. Walk the grounds of this 18th-century farm with its gardens, fish pond, gazebo and old family cemetery. There are assorted farm animals and a herd of American buffalo and the unusual Barbados sheep. Summerseat Farm Inc. is a designated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to preserving the history, agriculture and natural resources of the property as well as its agricultural and educational programs and is run solely by volunteers. The fourth annual Park to Park Paddle on June 12 will start at Parker's Creek for a 7-mile kayak paddle along Calvert Cliffs to the destination at Flag Ponds Nature Park. Along the way, naturalists will talk about the cliffs and the Chesapeake Bay and observe wildlife. After a provided lunch, a shuttle will take participants back. Experience what grass-roots aviation is all about by attending the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 478 Young Eagles Rally at the St. Mary's County Airport Terminal Building from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 12. Helping the Hospice House will host its fifth annual Poker Run starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12. Registration will be at 10:30 until 11:59 a.m. at CJ's Backroom Saloon. Participants will travel to Goose Landing, Seabreeze, Back Road Inn, Toot's Bar and back to CJ's Backroom Saloon. The Faith Walkers Relay for Life Team will hold a Relay for Life Benefit Gospel Concert starting at 4 p.m., Saturday, June 12, at Crossroad Christian Church, 150 Ball Road in St. Leonard. The event will feature Jimmy Russell & BOC, Praise Dance, Scattered Leaves and more. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. There will be an outdoor photography workshop with Robert Tinari from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sotterley Plantation. Award-winning nature photographer Tinari will offer his guidance and expertise to students during the workshop. His instruction will include the basic fundamentals of capturing the essence of a subject with a camera, with the emphasis being on gardens and architectural applications.

Annmarie Garden's Third Annual Spring Garden Party will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 12. Come and experience the party along with the opening of "Green: Art with the Earth in Mind." Meet the Green artists and jurors, enjoy complimentary wine and beer while enjoying appetizers and explore the newest outdoor exhibit. A silent auction preview will be from 5 to 6 p.m., with the garden party scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Annmarie Garden Scholarship Fund and the expansion of the Ceramic Studio. Emmanuel United Methodist Church will hold its annual all-you-can-eat barbecue chicken and ribs dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 12. Mt. Harmony-Lower Marlboro United Methodist Church will hold an all-you-can-eat community breakfast in its Fellowship Hall from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12. The menu includes bacon, sausage, scrapple, sausage gravy, biscuits, hash browns, grits, eggs, pancakes, cereal, fruit, pastries, coffee, tea, orange juice, apple juice and milk. Sunday, June 13

Scattered Leaves, with special guest artist Liz Chambers, will perform in concert at Calvary Bible Church at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 13. The church is located at 8300 Nursery Road in Lusby, directly across Route 4 from White Sands. Refreshments will follow the concert.

The Calvert High School Key Club will be holding a dog wash in cooperation with Calvert Animal Welfare League from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the CAWL center, 1040 Prince Frederick Blvd. in Prince Frederick. Cost is $5 for a small dog, $8 for a medium-sized dog, and $10 for a large dog. All dogs, people and donations are welcome. Key Club is an affiliate of Kiwanis.

The Chesapeake Choral Arts Society, directed by Michael Santana, will present its annual Spring Concert featuring "Frostiana: Seven Country Songs," composed by Randall Thompson with words by Robert Frost, and "Requiem" by John Rutter at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at La Plata United Methodist Church, 3 Port Tobacco Road in La Plata (near the intersection of Route 6 and U.S. 301). The College of Southern Maryland will host the Octtava Duo as part of its ongoing Ward Virts Concert Series at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the CSM Prince Frederick Campus, Room 119, 115 J.W. Monday, June 14

Children ages 18 months to 5 years are invited to join a naturalist at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp for a program about bees at 10 a.m. Monday, June 14. Participants will discover some different types of bees and see the difference between bees and wasps. Reservations are required. Adult Education Program Orientation and Skills Assessment will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 14, at the Hunting Creek Annex, 4105 Old Town Road in Huntingtown. The Adult Education Program is for all people who are older than 16, out of school and need a high school diploma. Adult Education classes, which help prepare students for the GED test or the External Diploma Program, are offered during the day and evening at various sites within the county. To enroll in an Adult Education class, students must participate in an orientation and skills assessment before being assigned to a class. Thursday, June 17

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), Calvert County Chapter, will meet at noon Thursday, June 17, at Cove Point Park, located on Cove Point Road in Lusby. The Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse Inc. will sponsor a Night Golf Tournament to benefit Project Graduation at Mellomar Golf Park in Owings on June 18. The American Chestnut Land Trust will host a non-native plant removal workday from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 19. Join the Vine Vindicator Crew as it works to remove non-native invasive plants species such as bamboo, Oriental bittersweet, wineberry, multi flora rose, and tree of heaven. Sunday, June 20

There will be a Try-It on Father's Day, a triathlon for ages 10 to 100, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 20, at Kings Landing Park, located at 3255 Kings Landing Road in Huntingtown. The event includes short distances for three events: a 175-meter swim (in a pool), 4 mile bike ride and 1.4 mile run. Maps will be provided before the race.

The event is a fundraiser for the Patuxent Football Academy youth soccer program in Calvert County

Dunkirk Baptist Church will host the Sixth Annual Father's Day Car, Truck and Bike Show beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, June 20 (rain date is June 27) at the church, located at 11275 Southern Maryland Blvd. in Dunkirk. The free event will feature live music, lunch, refreshments and children's activities.

The 10th Annual Leading Edge Awards, celebrating a decade of leadership excellence, will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf. Southern Maryland will unite to recognize its outstanding companies and leaders, celebrate those achieving significant growth and success and salute the people who contribute so much to the region. Calvert County Parks and Recreation will present the 19th annual Calvert County Employees and Friends Golf Tournament starting at 9 a.m. Friday, June 25, at Chesapeake Hills Golf Club in Lusby. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. Format is captain's choice best ball. Cost is $70 per person and includes: green fees, cart, beverages, prizes, lunch and more. Single players are welcome and will be paired with other groups. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place; closest to the pin; and longest drive. The SMILE Livestock Expo and Horse Show for regional youth will take place at the St. Mary's Fairgrounds in Leonardtown from June 25 to 27. The community is invited to join Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse Inc. for a night with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs beginning at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, June 26. This fundraising event will help CAASA raise funds to support alcohol and other drug prevention education programs in the community. Tickets to the game are $13, and $4 from each ticket purchased through the team's online website is donated to CAASA. There will be a "Free at Last! Black History Celebration" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at Sotterley Plantation. The event was rescheduled from February.

Sotterley Plantation has partnered with The Boeing Company to offer this important all day, free to the public event, as part of the 2010 Speaker Series. For a full day, there will be character presentations, tours of the original 1830s slave cabin, hands-on learning, children's activities, and the soulful praising performances by the St. Peter Claver Choir at 11 a.m. and the Southern Maryland Gospel Choir at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, June 30

All are invited to attend the Arts Council of Calvert County's Annual Meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, at the CalvART Gallery, 110 Solomons Island Road in Prince Frederick. The agenda includes the announcement of FY2011 Arts In Education grant recipients; introduction of new board members; the Mary D. Harrison award; and arts, music and refreshments.
