Windy Hill Elementary School students received the red carpet treatment on their last day of school but that still didn't stop some of the tears from flowing.

As she hugged a weeping student, Principal Kelley Adams said her first year in her job completely surpassed her expectations.

"It's awesome. I love my job … The kids are awesome; they're so looking forward to summer. We're going to have a fantastic end to a great year," Adams said.

"I agree and I'm a grandparent," echoed Korry Gough of North Beach, who said she picks up her granddaughter every Friday and is thrilled by what she sees.

What she saw on Friday, a half-day for Calvert County public school students, was no ordinary bus pickup but a party of sorts, complete with music, hats and lots of hugs.

"I'm very happy and sad at the same time, but it's exciting and I'm ready to go to fifth grade," said Harleigh White, 9, who said "I'm going to miss running errands for my teacher, I'm going to miss gym [class] and I'm going to miss everybody that was my friend."

Five-year-old rising first-grader Alyssa Ennis said that although she is looking forward to staying at home and playing with her toys, she will miss her teachers "because they are very nice."

She was not alone in this sentiment.

Luke Kremer and Joey Downing, both of whom are going to be in second grade in the fall, said that they had mixed feelings about the last day of school because they know they'll be without a special mentor over the summer.

"I'm going to miss my teachers," said Luke, 7, who added, however, that he is looking forward to having extra time to play "[Nintendo] Game-Boy games."

Joey, 7, said that he is looking forward to going to the beach and said that even though he was out sick for the last three days, "I'm happy that I'm off school."

"You are?" said Luke, looking at him skeptically.

Joey then revised his statement, saying he'd miss his teachers, as well.

Rising fifth-grader Kate Harbaugh said that she was happy to have a light last week of school to pump her up for the summer.

"We just did little warm-ups and then we got to do whatever we want [in class] for the rest of the day," said Kate, 10. " … It's pretty cool we don't have to do anymore school work and we get to hang out all summer with our friends."
