A severe thunderstorm hit the Compton area hardest Wednesday evening, bringing down trees across roadways and on top of a house.
The St. Mary's County Department of Public Safety reported that a tree fell atop a house at 22869 Newtowne Neck Road around 8:30 p.m.
"We did have some damage from the winds," said David Zylak, department director. There weren't any injuries reported from the tree on the house, he said.
A tree fell across Newtowne Neck nearby the damaged house and a tree and electric wires were reported down at Lady Baltimore Avenue. Trees also went down across Maddox Road near Notley Hall Road and across Budds Creek near Mechanicsville Road.
Lightning struck the Verizon building on Washington Street in Leonardtown. A nearby transformer blew there as well.
Rainfall ranged between .57 inches in Leonardtown to 1.35 inches in Ridge, according to a weather observer network.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 8:15 p.m.
Around 3,100 customers lost power in St. Mary's, mainly in the Leonardtown area, during the storm, according to SMECO's outage map.
