Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) and the school systems of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties recently honored 17 local educators for their accomplishments in the fields of mathematics and science.

Receiving honors this year were nine math teachers and eight science teachers from schools in the three counties. The teachers were chosen for their outstanding performance in the areas of creativity, rapport with students, enthusiasm for teaching, professionalism and innovative teaching methods. Each teacher received a plaque and a cash award.

SMECO President and CEO Austin J. Slater Jr. welcomed the award recipients and their guests to a dinner held in their honor. He explained SMECO's role as being "focused on providing reliable service and member programs, as well as helping to develop our communities," according to a press release.

Slater also emphasized that "a good education, brought about by good teachers, is critical to the future of our youth and vital to the continued success of businesses like SMECO, because well-educated students bring valuable math and science skills to the workplace."

The Outstanding Mathematics Teachers of the Year were:

Calvert County — Sarah Noland, Calvert Elementary School; Nicole Hewlett, Windy Hill Middle School; Blaine Mably, Patuxent High School;

Charles County — Christina Greer, Eva Turner Elementary School; Kellie Harding, John Hanson Middle School; Judy Bockstoce, North Point High School;

St. Mary's County — Maureen Baxter, Benjamin Banneker Elementary School; Jill Mierzwa, Spring Ridge Middle School; Karen Sandrock, Chopticon High School.

In addition to recognizing local educators for their accomplishments in the fields of mathematics and science, SMECO sponsors events for students to get them excited about math, science and technology. These events include the local MATHCOUNTS competition, the Annual Southern Maryland Regional Computer Bowl and the Elementary Computer Bowl. So far in 2010, more than 640 students in SMECO's service area have participated in these events with hundreds more expected to participate in the Elementary Math Challenge.
