North Point grad nominated to Naval Academy
U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski recently nominated 24 Marylanders who will be attending U.S. military academies in the fall, including Kirk Del Rosario of Waldorf, a North Point High School graduate.
He will attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
Mikulski (D-Md.) selected the nominees from among nearly 300 Maryland applicants.
"I am so proud of the young men and women who have worked so hard for the opportunity to serve our country in one of the military academies," Mikulski, who also serves on the Board of Visitors at the academy, said in a press release. "These young people are America's future leaders. The demanding course work and discipline offered by our academies will prepare them to take up the challenge of making the world a safer, better place to live."
Competition for academy appointments is intense among Maryland's high school seniors, who rank in the top 10 percent of their classes academically. Each student seeking an appointment must submit an application, which is examined by Mikulski as well as by an independent review panel assembled by the senator.
After the review process, Mikulski recommends 10 names for each academy vacancy.
McCaslin wins CSM Women & Math essay contest
Mia McCaslin of Port Tobacco submitted the winning essay in the annual Women & Math essay contest sponsored by the College of Southern Maryland's mathematics, physics and engineering division.
"I have always been interested in math, and I am currently enrolled in algebra two honors class and plan on taking pre-calculus and trigonometry next year," said high school sophomore McCaslin in a CSM press release.
"The goal of the essay contest is to get young girls to interact with professional women in the STEM fields, in order to learn about the challenges and how to pursue careers in those related fields," said Sandra Poinsett, CSM professor of mathematics, in the release.
For her essay, McCaslin interviewed Adrianne Cooper a computer and flight test engineer with NAVAIR.
The essay contest is part of the college's ongoing efforts to promote the fields of science, technology, engineering and math and to encourage young women to enter these fields. McCaslin was awarded a $250 gift card.
