Police in search of a severed hand tracked down a Port Tobacco man who allegedly crashed his car and then left his seriously injured passenger at the accident site, according to court papers in a case that recently drew an indictment.
Wade E. Morgan, 38, told police that he couldn't find his friend after the Nanjemoy accident on Feb. 27, so he drove away, the papers state.
At about 8:36 p.m., emergency workers went to the crash scene at Port Tobacco Road near Tayloes Neck Road and found the friend, whose hand had been severed. Medics believed the appendage was still in Morgan's car, according to court documents.
Maryland State Police trooper J. Wilson stopped Morgan at Beaverdam Road, but the hand wasn't in the car, police wrote in the documents.
Morgan failed a sobriety test, which the state trooper administered after noticing that the Port Tobacco man was slurring his speech and couldn't stay balanced, the record shows.
Police discovered six OxyContin tablets in Morgan's pocket, PCP mixed into a bottle of parsley and some prescription drugs, according to the court papers. A tinfoil smoking device containing some parsley and PCP was found inside the car, the document indicated.
Morgan is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious physical injury, driving or attempting to drive while impaired by a controlled dangerous substance, driving or attempting to drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol and three counts of drug possession.
His trial is set for Oct. 5.
He is out of jail on a $50,000 bond, court records indicate.
Man charged with kidnapping, assault
A woman told police that a Waldorf man held a knife against her throat, smashed her head with a lamp and stole her car in early June, according to court documents.
The victim said she was telling Rashamel S. Everett, a friend, about her career goals at his home in Waldorf on June 3 when he got upset and took out a knife, the records stated.
The woman fell to the floor and felt the knife being "placed across her throat," according to the court documents. Everett punched her in the face as she struggled and hit her in the head with a glass lamp, the papers report. Everett, 19, also struck her on the head several times with a trophy, the documents alleged.
He then apologized for assaulting the victim and asked for the keys to her 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. When the woman resisted, Everett closed his fist, and she gave him the car keys for fear that he would attack her again, the report indicated. Everett threatened to kill the woman if she reported the incident to police, court documents state.
The teen took the woman to a nearby neighborhood, let her out of the car and drove the Cobalt away, the court papers report.
Charles County sheriff's officers spoke with the victim at Civista Medical Center in La Plata the same day. Her face was severely swollen, and she had cuts on her finger and head, according to the papers.
Police found the woman's car near Brandywine and arrested Everett, who admitted to hitting the victim with a lamp, according to the report. However, he said he had the victim's permission to take the car.
Everett is charged with first-degree assault, false imprisonment, robbery, theft of more than $500 and kidnapping.
His trial is scheduled for Nov. 17, and he is out of jail on a $100,000 bond, according to court records.
