Thank you, Calvert

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

As co-chairs of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Calvert County, it is with great pleasure that we let you and the community know that we, Calvert County, raised $453,000 through our event this year. And, not only did we raise $453,000, we did it with less than $8,000 in expenses. How amazing is that? Pulling off such a huge walking event in Calvert County while only incurring expenses of less than $8,000 is a tribute to the dedication of Calvert County to work together to provide an event where everyone is welcome to attend and share in the experience of fighting cancer back. In addition, this overnight walk held here in our own county hosted about 4,000 residents and their families and friends throughout the night.

It was another huge success and we are so thrilled that not only did everyone enjoy the experience of relay again but we beat our dollar figures from last year by $15,000. Last year we were No. 7 in the nation for per capita fundraising with the American Cancer Society.

Showplace Arena, Sneade’s Ace Home Hardware, Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and The Calvert Recorder once again stood by our efforts and supported our event as gold sponsors and volunteers. They, too, are eager to work with our community to help eradicate this disease and provide support programs for cancer patients, preventative education for all, as well as cancer advocacy and the impact of cancer on our community.

We greatly appreciate all the Calvert County businesses that have supported and continue to support our event in various ways.

Each donation the various businesses made to this fabulous event helped to create an event not to be forgotten and to greatly lessen our expenses of making the event happen.

These donations left more funds to donate to the cause.

Just in case you are thinking you have more time to volunteer or a business interested in partnering for 2009, we wanted to let you know you can contact prosnage@comcast.net now. The planning has begun.

We are all well aware that our 2008 success was due to everyone in our community who supported the effort of our many relayer, either by making a monetary donation, an in kind donation, a donation of a service or item, or a donation of your time.

Also, many of you participated in the study that was held that night. Way to go, Calvert: Your eager participation even surprised the ACS survey organizers who did not count on so many of us stepping up to participate in the 30 year survey to track lifestyle involvement in cancer diagnosis.

You spoke volumes by signing up and saying ‘‘Calvert County will fight back,” and, your volunteer Relay for Life organizing committee thanks you.

The successful evening was all about celebrating those who have had cancer, those who are fighting cancer, caregivers who support the patients while all along never forgetting those we have lost to the horrible disease. We danced, we walked, we laughed, we cried and we celebrated, because we know we are making a difference.

As co-chairs, we applaud each and every Calvert County resident who chose to stand with us to fight back. Please consider joining us again next year.
