Two scholarships awarded in Kepferle’s memory

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

The annual college scholarship established in memory of 1999 Great Mills High School graduate, Pat Kepferle, was awarded this year to two high school students. Amy Hofmeister of Great Mills High School and Devin Bohanan of Leonardtown High School were selected to receive the awards.

Hofmeister is planning to attend Mars Hill College in North Carolina and Bohanan plans to study engineering at Virginia Tech.

Each student will receive $1,000 toward their college education this year.

The memorial scholarship was established after 18-year-old Kepferle suddenly died from vaccine-preventable meningococcal meningitis on March 5, 2000, while attending college. The trustees award the scholarship to college-bound applicants from St. Mary’s County who are selected as best representing Kepferle’s selfless nature and his determination to overcome obstacles. The annual award is made possible through the generous contributions of individual donors in the local area and across the country.

Additional information about Kepferle, meningitis prevention and local youth support efforts in his memory can be found at Tap’s Community Brotherhood Web site, www.thetcb.org.
