Way to limit competition

What a surprise and what a coincidence that David Dent, a member of the St. Mary's County Licensed Beverage Association, (letters, July 29) favors capping the number of liquor store licenses.
A wonderful way to limit competition — and have the government do the limiting. What a deal — for those who already have a license.
And according to your front page article on July 29, Sen. Ben Cardin suggested, during an appearance at the Veterans Home, that we should "calm down" and evaluate health care bills.
He and his cohorts in the U.S. Congress should follow that very same advice, and stop the mad nearly hysterical stampede to "do something and do it now".
Such sweeping changes as being proposed should be approached with great care, consideration and clear thinking — not a frantic rush, to meet an arbitrary deadline.
