The Southern Maryland Oyster Cultivation Society (SMOCS) along with staff from the Calvert Marine Museum, will be depositing more than 200,000 oysters at test sites in the Mill Creek Watershed this Saturday, Aug. 29.
The event will mark the completion of a year-long project that began last August with the planting of spat, or baby oysters. Once they were ready, the spat were delivered to SMOCS members, who put the spat under their docks in buoyant oyster cultivation systems. On Saturday, the grown oysters will be deposited at the prepared test sites in the hopes of locating areas most likely to support oyster communities.
SMOCS is a grassroots organization dedicated to raising oysters and improving water quality through building oyster reefs, which act as natural water filters, public outreach and targeted advocacy, according to a press release. For more information, go to www.smocs.org.
