To celebrate the end of summer play and the beginning of a successful school year, Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church held a Service in the Park Aug. 30 at the Big Foot Club grounds in Loveville.
During the morning outdoor service special prayers were offered for children that they remain safe, open their minds to new ideas and remain focused to do their best throughout the school year.
The Rev. Sandra Greene, church pastor, anointed each child with oil to symbolize that they have been marked by God as his children to be loved and cared for.
After the service, a barbecue picnic was held.
Guests came from Baltimore, Washington D.C., and the Eastern Shore with one guest coming from as far away as St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Members from several local churches also participated including Ebenezer AME Church, New Beginnings Church and Life Changing Healing Church.
As a special extension of the morning service, local gospel group God's Inspiration performed a number of selections.
"It was like everyone was on one accord in Christian worship, service and fellowship," Greene said in a press release.
"We truly had a wonderful time in the spirit."
Mt. Calvary UMC is in Charlotte Hall at the intersection of routes 5 and 6.
Worship time is 10 a.m. Sunday.
