Speeders targeted at trail crossings

Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009

Officers warned and ticketed dozens of drivers one weekend late last month at road crossings for the Indian Head Rail Trail, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

Police checked car speeds on Pomfret Road, Bensville Road and Bumpy Oak Road.

They targeted trail crossings where car speeds were concerns to drivers, cyclists and sheriff's officers.

Police issued 68 warnings and citations to drivers traveling at least 15 miles per hour more than the speed limit near the crossings, a sheriff's press release stated.

Police cited 28 more drivers who were driving 13 to 31 miles per hour over the speed limit Monday morning near the Pomfret Road intersection.

Officers will keep checking speeds at the crossings to remind drivers to slow down near the Indian Head Rail Trail, which is attracting more pedestrians and cyclists, according to police.

Temporary speed trailers will be used in some areas to warn people of their speeds and the upcoming crossing. Police are also reminding bikers that under Maryland law, they have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, meaning they must stop at red lights and stop signs, the press release stated.
