TCB’s year of fundraising efforts included back-to-school picnic

Friday, Sept. 12, 2008

Promoting participation in youth activities and community volunteerism is at the root of Tap’s Community Brotherhood’s mission.

Thanks to a strong year of fundraising efforts, TCB organized another fun community event. On Aug. 9, TCB held its first back-to-school picnic.

More than 200 students and their families gathered at Nicolet Park for a free picnic and to get a head start on the late summer rush for school supplies. The event was open to the public so all were welcome to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, chips (donated by Frito-Lay), complimentary access to the water park and a free drawstring bag full of school supplies. Added excitement was provided through donations of a moon bounce by Kimflatables and a special guest appearance by Super Magic Man.

TCB was established in April 2006 in memory of Joseph ‘‘Pat” Kepferle, a graduate of Great Mills High School. It was fitting that the back to school picnic was held in the Great Mills area and that so many friends and family were able to volunteer their time to make it a success.

Reggie Rice (Super Magic Man) a former classmate of Kepferle, was eager to participate.

‘‘It is great to see his [Kepferle’s] legacy carried on,” Rice said after his show. ‘‘It is nice to be able to give to the cause.”

Donations to the Pajama Connection and Hunter Dean Scott Foundation were also made this year by TCB.

The Pajama Connection provides infants to children with beach bags filled with new pajamas, flip flops, socks, stuffed animals and books to tri-county area shelters. The Pajama Connection solely relies on donations by the community. If you would like to assist the Pajama Connection, please contact 301-904-3427.

The Hunter Dean Scott Foundation was established to support the Scott family while their 4-year-old son, Hunter, battles brain cancer. Hunter’s mother, Sandy, is also a former classmate of Kepferle. Donations can be made to the Hunter Dean Scott Foundation at PNC Bank locations, or mailed to P.O. Box 289, Solomons, MD 20688.

TCB hopes to foster community growth by being a living example of the brotherhood created through the loss of a loved one. The members believe community events and programs are integral to the positive development of our youth.
