As Calvert's football team rushed onto its home field Friday night, they busted through a sign held up by its cheerleaders that told their opponents from La Plata to watch out.
It was the Cavaliers — wearing black and yellow on this homecoming night — who had to watch out early, but the hosts came roaring back and knocked off the visiting Warriors, 35-12.
Senior running back Dai'Quan Garner was one of many reasons that La Plata had to watch out for. After La Plata quickly led 6-0, Garner scored from 43 yards out on Calvert's first possession of night, just 2 minutes 10 seconds into the contest, and Calvert would not trail again.
"Our school spirit today made us play better for the crowd and for our school," said Garner, who had 14 carries for 109 yards. "We've been working hard going over our plays during the week."
La Plata grabbed the early lead when quarterback Vince Hall threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Conley 1 minute 39 seconds in. Calvert scored 35 unanswered points until La Plata added its final touchdown with 2:50 left in regulation with a 70-yard pass to Conley.
"It was a good game," Calvert head coach Marc Watson said. "Our kids are resilient and were excited and they did the job in the first half. They ran the ball extremely well and our defense did a nice job tonight. Our kids put a lot of pressure on their quarterback. We played down most of last season."
After La Plata scored, Calvert (3-1, 2-1 SMAC) received good field position after an unsportsmanlike penalty and Garner later scored on third and 6.
In the second quarter Torez Cooke picked off a pass and the Cavaliers took over. Garner ran 25 yards to the 37, then a 15-yard La Plata penalty put the ball across midfield where senior running back Ronaz King finished the drive with a 48-yard scamper, extending Calvert's lead to 14-6.
Calvert added to its lead after Garner recovered a fumble. Four plays later, tight end Kyle Gott caught a two-yard pass from quarterback Frank Lanham.
Lanham took one in himself when he ran 34 yards to give Calvert a 28-6 lead with 1:39 left in the half.
"We just opened up the field a little bit tonight," Lanham said. "We came out here a different team this year. It's going to take heart to beat Huntingtown this week. They're no better than we are. They won the game last year and beat us on turnovers, but we have this game this year."
