At the recent Charles County Fair, Burkey Boggs of the Southern Maryland Carousel Group and Joanne Chapman of the Charles County Antique Arts Association are shown standing behind the rooster that is being carved for the carousel.

The Charles County chapter of the American Antique Arts Association will sponsor one of the animals being carved for the carousel being built by the Southern Maryland Carousel Group Inc.

The chapter chose a rooster as its animal, since the logo of the association is a rooster.

The association is a nonprofit organization devoted to the appreciation, study and preservation of American antiques, architecture, arts, crafts and local history.

Since its inception in 1977, the Charles County chapter has donated more than $30,000 in contributions to a number of historical projects.

These projects include the Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco, the Dr. Samuel Mudd House, Cat Slide House, the Southern Maryland Room at the College of Southern Maryland, Friendship House, the Museum for African-American Heritage and the Charles County Genealogical Society. The chapter also has an ongoing project for funding of American period furniture for Habre de Venture, the home of Thomas Stone.

The chapter has several fundraising activities during the course of the year.

The chapter meets at 9:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month from September through June at the Charles County Department of Social Services building at 200 Kent Ave. in La Plata.

Programs feature speakers on subjects such as antiques, collectibles and local history. A bimonthly newsletter informs members of the activities of all 14 chapters. Throughout the years, the chapter has sponsored tours to historical sites and related points of interest. Membership is open to anyone interested in antiques and Americana.
