Maryland State Police confer at the scene of Monday's fatal crash on a Hollywood roadway involving a car and bicycle, lying on the edge of a travel lane after the collision.

A Hollywood man described by police as an avid bicyclist died Monday morning, the lawmen report, when the bike he was riding on Clarke's Landing Road was struck from behind by a car.

Curtis Andrew Leymeister, 47, was thrown from his bicycle by the impact, and he died at the scene of the 7:58 a.m. crash despite efforts by emergency-medical service volunteers to save his life, according to Maryland State Police. The driver of the Honda Accord, 20-year-old Kathy May Lee of Hollywood, was not injured.

Leymeister was riding the bike west in the westbound lane of the roadway, near its intersection with Scotch Neck Road, police reported after the collision.

"It was in the travel portion of the roadway, centered in the westbound lane," state police Cpl. Derek Peck said at the Leonardtown barrack that afternoon. "He was going the right way. He's supposed to be on the [paved] shoulder."

Leymeister was traveling away from his family home, located nearer the eastern end of the roadway, according to police.

"He was an avid bicyclist," Peck said. "He had a valid [driver's] license. He chose to ride his bike."

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, the corporal said, but it is not known if protective head gear would have lessened his injuries. The car had visible damage to its roof and windshield.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates the car's driver was traveling within the posted 40-mph speed limit, as she was on her way to a college campus.

"We have no reason to think she was speeding," Peck said.

Leymeister's family declined Tuesday to comment on the matter during a call to the residence, located near the scene of the accident investigated by state police Trooper J.A. Pilkerton.
