Huntingtown racked up 385 yards on the ground on its way to a 50-13 pounding at Calvert last Friday evening in a battle of county rivals.
"We had lost two in a row and that's a long time without a win so we needed a win," Huntingtown head coach Jerry Franks said, referring to losses to Chopticon and Westlake. "What we wanted to do was we wanted go out and control the line of scrimmage and we went out and played an old-fashioned football game. Our game plan was to go out and establish the run and control the line of scrimmage and I think we were successful with that."
The contest was scheduled for Thursday evening, but postponed a day due to the enormous rains that hit the region.
"We continue to lose the battle upfront on both sides of the ball each week," Calvert head coach Marc Watson said. "When that happens, it is difficult to come away with a win."
The 50 points for Huntingtown were a season-high and eclipsed the previous high of 35 during a win over Northern on Sept. 10.
Davonte Fletcher led the ground attack with 244 yards, while Nick Ersoy added 62 yards on just three carries and Charles Chase had 42 yards on four carries.
The Hurricanes (3-2, 2-2 SMAC) scored all of their touchdowns on the ground with Fletcher, Andrew Bose and Nick Ersoy leading the way with two apiece.
Bose opened the scoring with a four-yard run in the first quarter and Fletcher galloped 55 yards to score his first of the game later in the period. He also added an eight-yarder to give Huntingtown a 21-0 lead after 12 minutes.
Bose added to the lead with a two-yard run in the second quarter and Ersoy's 34-yard score put the visitors ahead, 36-6, at halftime. Ersoy scored his second TD on a 15-yard jaunt in the third quarter and Chase closed out the rout with a 13-yard scamper in the fourth.
"We knew that when the year started we were going to be inexperienced and we didn't know how quickly we would gain the experience necessary to put us back in the playoffs," Franks said. "...We lost to Chopticon and Westlake because we didn't have the experience to handle some of the things they were doing. We think we had a good ballgame Friday night and gained some experience and some confidence so we have hopes this will be a springboard for this week. Then we get what I consider to be murderer's row with Patuxent, McDonough, Lackey and Great Mills."
Quarterback Justin Bittner completed 5 of 6 passes for 62 yards with Ersoy hauling in three balls for 43 yards. Bittner also connected with Dashawn Torney on a two-point conversion in the second quarter. Kicker Mark Smith converted on all six of his attempts.
Defensively, Bose and Smith tied for the team lead with seven tackles apiece, while Torney had six. Johann Somerville, Ryley Venables and Kolby Taylor each added four. David Bell had an interception and David Riddle recovered a fumble.
The Cavaliers (1-4, 1-3) scored their first touchdown when C.J. Cannon scored from a yard out in the second quarter and Jermaine Hunter had a three-yard plunge in the fourth.
Calvert has lost three straight and allowed an average of 46.6 points against during that span.
"We are stressing to our players that they have to play to their potential and do as they are coached for 48 minutes," Watson said. "We see flashes of good things, but right now those good things are not happening often enough. We are a young team and lack depth in almost all areas. We will continue to work hard and will improve as the season moves on."
