In Friday evening's non-conference match-up between host North Point and Calvert, the contest only lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes. And just as fast as the game clock was moving, that's how quick the red-hot Eagles flew to a 41-0 shutout of the Cavaliers to stay perfect at 6-0 overall on the season.
The game was slated for 4 p.m. because of the continued maintenance on the stanchion base of the stadium lights.
It was the second straight shutout for North Point, as it prepares to visit defending 3A state champion Westlake at 7 Friday night in what will be an intense SMAC match-up.
"I was trying to keep the kids focused on playing a game that's right after school; four o' clock is not the norm right now. I'm sure it was a concern for [Calvert] too," said North Point head coach Ken Lane on the concerns of an early outing for his team. "But the kids responded well, they got out of class, got ready quick and seemed focus. We had a couple bounces go our way early, good field position and that kind of got us rolling. We moved the ball pretty well [on offense] and Calvert is a good football team, we just stayed on and they weren't able to do a lot offensively."
The North Point defense ground the visitors' offense to a halt, yielding only 27 yards rushing on 26 carries and 68 yards through the air due to immense pressure up front by the Eagles' linebacking corps.
"We're just taking one game at a time right now," said North Point sophomore linebacker Anthony Zoscak, who helped head the defense in the victory. "Calvert is a good team that put up a good fight, we've just been practicing hard. The line brought pressure, linebackers made tackles in the backfield, defensive backs made picks. We're just one team."
Offensively, the Eagles were led by speedster Trey Scott with 138 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
His longest run was a 40-yard scamper with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
"We had a good push on the offensive line; they really stepped their game up," said Scott, who scored his team's first touchdown from five yards out toward the end of the opening period. "It's going to be a lot of trash-talking [at Westlake], a big rivalry and that's all we are focused on right now. Westlake is what will set us up for the playoffs and decide how far we will go."
After fumbling the football on its opening drive, Calvert again turned it over as quarterback Frank Lanham was picked off by junior Anthony Prince with 20 ticks left in the first quarter.
It was the first of two interceptions for the Eagles.
North Point later scored in second when Eagles quarterback Dan Dempsey pushed his way in for a 10-yard score to put the Eagles up 14-0 at halftime.
"I told the kids that this is the first game of the second half of the season, it's kind of like we started a whole new season," Lane said of his red-hot Eagles. "We've put ourselves in good position, now we have to stay focused the next four games, and next week, stay focused and keep it rolling.
Calvert (3-3) had three turnovers on all eight of its possessions and was forced to punt three times.
"We had to stay focused this week, had some distractions in the locker room," said Ja'Wan Poole who also was key at the linebacker position.
"Next week we [need to] have a big game, but [tonight] we stayed key and the offensive line blocked good in the second half and we made plays on D."
