Helen Elizabeth Alestock, 79, of Reston, Va., died Oct. 10, 2008.
Born Jan. 20, 1929, in Raphine, Va., she was the daughter of the late Scott and the late Ocie Rhodes Alestock.
She graduated from Lylburn Downing High School in Lexington, Va. She and her family were members of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Steeles Tavern, Va. Later she became one of the founding members of First Baptist Church in Sterling, Va., where she served over the years as usher, choir member and church secretary. Recently, she was a member of Martin Luther King Jr. Christian Church in Reston.
She and her former husband, Charles Marcellus Payne, were married in 1949.
She loved to knit, crochet, do crossword puzzles, play computer games and play Scrabble with friends, and she had a special fondness for all wrestling shows. On her children's birthdays she would treat them to their favorite home-cooked meal and dessert of their choice.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William, who gave her the nickname Guinea, and Ray Alestock; and sister, Mary Alice Howard.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn Newton and her husband, Frederick of Jacksonville, Fla., Beverly Walker and her husband, Charles of Herndon, Va., Charles Payne Jr. of Jacksonville, Karen Williams and her husband, Ray of Sterling, Va., Lisa Keating and her husband, Sean of Herndon, Va., and Stephon Payne and his wife, Cheray of Sterling; grandchildren, Shaylnn Hand and her husband, David, Nyshalyn Hogan, Brenden Roy and his wife, Lauren, Erin Newton, Brianna Roy, Ray Williams Jr., Patrick Keating, Brittney Williams, Fabiann Keating, Timothy Keating and Alisa Keating; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Joshua and Sarah Hand, Josiah, Jalonnee, Janiah and Eli Hogan; sisters, Katherine King of Staunton, Va., Jean Johnson of Herndon, Va., and Grace Every of Buena Vista, Va.; brothers, Scott Alestock Jr. of Steeles Tavern, Va., and Winston Alestock and his wife, Ruth of Waynesboro, Va.; nieces, nephews, cousins; and friend, Portia Johnson.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Oct. 16 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Herndon, Va. Burial will take place at St. Paul's Cemetery, Steeles Tavern.
