A Sunderland man died as the result of the injuries he sustained in a three-vehicle crash Saturday shortly before 1 p.m. on Route 2 in Sunderland.
Glenn Eugene Holland, 49, of Sunderland sustained mortal injuries and was pronounced dead at Calvert Memorial Hospital by emergency room staff after being involved in an accident at the intersection of Route 2 and Kent Road in Sunderland, a Calvert County Sheriff's Office press release stated.
A preliminary investigation by members of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Team (CRT) and the Maryland State Police revealed that a tan 1995 Nissan Altima, operated by Holland, was heading north on Route 2 and was making a left turn onto westbound Kent Road. Holland was yielding to the southbound traffic on Route 2 when his vehicle was struck from behind by a 1994 Toyota Corolla Station Wagon, pushing Holland's vehicle into the southbound lane of Route 2. Holland's vehicle was then struck by a 2004 Ford Explorer traveling south on Route 2.
Both the driver of the 1994 Toyota Corolla Station Wagon, Paul Charles Moler, 32, of St. Leonard, and front seat passenger, Christine A. Moler, 33, sustained minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene. Holland was the only person in his vehicle.
Upon impact with the Explorer, Holland's vehicle was redirected in a southwesterly direction and came to rest in the southbound lane culvert of Route 2.
The Explorer was driven by Kathy Diane Walton, 55, of Huntingtown and the front seat passenger was Kimberly Diane King, 33, of Lusby. Three juveniles were also in the vehicle. All five occupants of the Explorer were transported to the Calvert Memorial Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and later released.
Cpl. Vladimir Bortchevsky said the investigation is on-going, but based on initial examination it appears that all persons involved were wearing seatbelts and alcohol or drugs are not suspected.
